8 BILLION tons of plastic produced over the last century
Groundbreaking Airship Expedition Tackling Humanity’s Invisible Crisis and Engaging Citizen Scientists—The Earth Will Endure, but Will We?
Why do we need to know now? Our health is rapidly declining due to environmental factors.
There is currently a patch of trash floating in the Pacific Ocean twice the size of Texas—or by some estimates, as large as Australia.
Microplastics aren’t just contaminating our oceans—they’ve infiltrated the air we breathe, posing severe risks to public health. They accumulate in our bodies, inflaming lungs, getting in our blood, contaminating mother’s milk, and trash our brains.
A single example of unintended consequences of modern living. If you’re wearing synthetic clothing right now, chances are you’re inhaling a slew of microplastic fibers. These plastics are breaking down into microplastics, contaminating our food, water, and now even the air we breathe.
For all of us, it is personal.
Microplastics are suspended in the air and enter our lungs with every breath.
Skin contact with plastic-based synthetic clothing and personal care products introduces plastics into the body.
Plastics are consumed via contaminated food, water, and beverages.
Our team of scientists and media specialists, led by Dr. Dimitri Dominique Deheyn, is launching the first ever airborne expedition to uncover the hidden impact of microplastics in our atmosphere from the ground to 3000 feet. At the heart of this effort is a state-of-the-art airship, a flying multi-tasking laboratory that will gather real-time data and simultaneously create a colossal commanding broadcast and social media platform.
Working with Scripps University’s Research Labs, the data collected during this expedition will serve as the first-ever baseline for understanding airborne microplastic pollution, providing a foundation to guide and inspire future research and environmental action worldwide.
The Sky Games initiative amplifies this research through geotagged, interactive scientific challenges, engaging local communities and global audiences to inspire understanding and action.
Silence is not an option.
As the airship soars overhead, two competing teams will engage in challenges inspired by real-world environmental science, with opportunities for collaboration with local scientists and communities. The teams will be led by Dr. Sian Proctor & Entrepreneur Joseph Lazukin
Dr. Sian Proctor in Sky Games is more than a guide; she’s a beacon of hope and innovation, weaving science, art, and exploration into every aspect of the competition. With her at the helm, participants and viewers alike are inspired to think beyond their limits and embrace the adventure of saving our planet.
Joseph Lazukin is a multifaceted entrepreneur renowned for his ventures in artificial intelligence (AI) and ambitious aerospace endeavors. His expertise spans the development of AI-driven trading bots and contributions to web3 game development. Notably, he has been involved in capturing solar eclipses from space using 360 HD virtual reality technology.
The airship’s research expedition will blend groundbreaking research with community engagement, creating maximum media buzz and fostering local involvement. It will hover over key cities identified as major pollution hotspots as well as those recognized for their clean air, providing a stark contrast and valuable insights.

Dimitri Deheyn is a Research Scientist at the Marine Biology Research Division of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. He conducts cross-disciplinary research on emerging pollutants, such as plastics, and especially microplastics and textile microfibers and their associated additives. Key aspects of his studies include examining these microparticles from high mountains to the bottom of the ocean, from lakes to rivers, lagoons, and coastal ocean waters, and also looking at them in snow, rain and in the atmosphere, always considering a global perspective.
Deheyn grew up in Africa and South America, and in 1998 completed his PhD in Belgium and started at Scripps Oceanography in 1999. His multi-continental past has equipped him with a worldwide view on environmental issues. His work aims to understand ecosystems that are critical to support a healthy future of our planet, and to protect these ecosystems against rapidly increasing environmental challenges... climate change and plastics being among the most detrimental threats.
